Marrin's essay about a slave's story

*The students read an article that told about a slave who lived long ago named Jeffrey Brace. He was captured in Africa and brought to America. He eventually wrote a book about his experiences as a slave. The students discussed why historical books like this are important to us now.

My name is Marrin. I live in a small town in Alaska. In school we learned about slavery. We read Henry’s Freedom Box and Harriet Tubman. I think stories like Jeffrey Brace’s are important because they teach us what life was like for a captured slave.

Jeffrey Brace was a slave a lot of times. He got sold to a woman. That woman taught him to read and write and she let him have freedom forever and he wrote a book about slavery.

We don’t want bad things like that to happen again. It helps us know how it felt. They (slaves) were probably very sad and very mad.
